Kidney progenitors from human urine

Single-cell RNA-Seq analysis identified kidney progenitor cells from human urine
A single-cell atlas of adult urine identified SOX9-positive kidney progenitor cells. After intrarenal transplantation, human-derived cell clones formed luminal structures with some renal tubular features in injured immunodeficient mice.
What this study examined
- Urine samples from 12 healthy adults
- Final analysis: 1,010 cells across 7 cell populations
- Clones were obtained from 8 of 9 healthy adult samples and 6 of 8 chronic kidney disease samples
- Human-derived luminal structures were observed 14 days after transplantation; this was not a study of a complete kidney or a finished topical gel
Why the study matters
Regenerative clues in urine: from a single-cell atlas of adult urine to the isolation of kidney progenitor cells.
