First, identify cells that can be studied
Published in Protein & Cell in 2021, this study used single-cell analysis of adult urine to identify kidney progenitor cells expressing the cell marker SOX9 and showing regenerative potential. It then investigated the behavior of human-derived cell clones in injured mouse kidneys.
Building renal tubular organoids in vitro
Published in Life Medicine in 2023, this study generated renal tubular organoids from adult kidney progenitor cells expressing the SOX9 marker under specific in vitro culture conditions. These miniature tissue models were grown outside the body, and their cell types were analyzed by single-cell sequencing.
Making regeneration a process we can study
Research has progressed from identifying kidney progenitor cells to growing renal tubular organoids outside the body, providing experimental models of tissue formation and repair.
